Black Mount Mountaineering Experience

THE BEST HILLWALKING TOURS IN SCOTLAND

About Us

We are passionate about the natural world and its beautiful wild places.

We have a deep respect and appreciation for the environment and a love for adventure and silent human-powered sports.

More about us

We love the idea that many people don’t know where Black Mount is: It’s remote and wild and lies between Glen Orchy and Glen Coe. A complex mass of summits, ridges and corries.

We leave from Inveroran following a river and then a mountain stream up to a mountain pass at 668 meters.

From here we hike and scramble to the summit of Stob Ghabhar at 1090 meters via steep scree fields and the “little” Aonach Eagach ridge.

The views across the wilds of Rannoch Moor and towards Glen Coe are spectacular.

At this point we have the option to follow the edge of a giant corrie and descend into the hidden Coirein Lochan, a beautiful mountain loch surrounded by rocky slopes and cliffs with a waterfall cascading over slabs to pools below.

Few people venture here: there is a great sense of calm and solitude. As we return there is also the option to summit the adjacent Stob a Choire Odhair.

This is a long, wild and highly rewarding experience into the wilderness.

Customer Reviews

Visiting Scotland and finding myself with a free day and needing a quick mountain fix, Ocean Vertical arranged a 15 km Scottish winter mountaineering experience to Stob Ghabhar by the Little Aonach Eagach for me in typical Fall / winter conditions, lots of grey swirling cloud giving epic glimpses of Rannoch Moor and the Glen Coe mountains.

Highly professional with lots of advice and crucially encouragement; and they got me there and back from Edinburgh. I’d definitively use Ocean Vertical for my next fix when I visit Scotland again; inordinately recommended!
